About his three D’s and two F’s, Joey said, “We went to Canada to visit relatives. Then I was sick for a couple of days.” Now, what do a trip to Canada and a nasty cold have to do with grades? Everything! As educator Richard White put it, “It may seem obvious that children with the best school attendance are the best performers, but that link is proving even stronger than educators suspected.”

Remember S. Silversteins, “Sick,” about the kid who comes up with every ailment under the sun until his mother tells him it’s Saturday? We all have days when getting out of bed seems out of the question. But haul ourselves out we do-something about being responsible, dependable. Why would we expect anything less from our children? It seems we do, however.

Take Canada, for example. Joey’s family vacation took place when school was in session, not during an official holiday-and yet there are plenty of those. Just think winter and spring breaks; think no-school summers! Nevertheless, parents keep taking off with their kids; the favorite reason, naturally, is for an educational trip. As if all that learning down there in Disney World can’t wait till June.

In Newsweek’s “Where Are the Parents,” John McCormick wrote, “Many parents behave as though the school exists for their child alone; a particularly annoying sub-species of the self-absorbed pulls kids out of class for family vacations and asks teachers to prepare a week’s worth of lessons, presumably to be administered by the ski patrol.” Couldn’t have said it better myself. Don’t do it!!

In its “You’re Part of the Equation, Too,” the Pennsylvania State Education Association voiced its disapproval, saying, “Absenteeism affects more than just the child. The teacher must struggle to fit extra time into a full schedule to help the student catch up. And since learning is a continuing, connected process, if a student misses Tuesday’s lesson, Wednesday’s lesson may not make much sense.” Pay such a high price only in the case of illness or the loss of loved ones, and in the meantime:

1. Set a reasonable bedtime for your child and stick to it, or risk that she won’t want to get up the next morning and, once at school, won’t be very alert.

2. Besides a good night’s sleep, provide a healthy diet to help ward off infections and maintain energy levels.

3. Schedule all dentist, orthodontist, and routine doctor appointments for after-school hours.

4. Don’t buy the line that he’s too tired to go to school. Going there every day is his job and is as important as your own.

5. Serve as a role model, going to work even when exhausted, behind on your to-do list, or coming down with the sniffles.

6. Most schools will gather work only after someone has missed three consecutive days of school. That’s too long to wait, so, when sick, have your child ask a classmate to gather all assignments, leaving them in the main office for you to pick up or dropping them off. Then once she’s better, get her started on all that collected school work.

7. Save trips and visits to out-of-town relatives for school holidays and vacations. If you must take your child out of school for such a trip, insist that he collect work in advance from all teachers and make sure that it’s all done by the time you return.

8. Place a high value on the work of schools, reminding your child to show up, be counted, and work hard. Few exceptions.

The summer weather in northern Europe was a strange mix, with different countries experiencing greatly differing weather patterns.

In southern Europe Mediterranean countries such as Greece saw temperatures soar over the hundred farenheit mark, while in Britain floods caused misery for hundreds of thousands of people.

The floods affected large parts of England and claimed four lives, and left a hundred thousand homes without water for two weeks in parts of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Insurance companies warned that the floods will cost small businesses millions, and insurers are paying out tens of millions in claims from homeowners. The British government offered emergency aid to the worst affected areas to help with the cost of the clear-up. Yorkshire in the north of England saw some of the heaviest flooding, with thousands of homes left without power and three people dying.

But extreme weather, with snow in July and October, was a welcome sight in Austria and the French Pyrenees, and Andorra in particular which had little snow in their usual ski season of December to April, bringing hope that this winter will see a good level of snow.

Andorra is a ski country and a well known tax haven, and traditionally the year gets off to a flying start with many serious skiers looking for a holiday home buying an apartment or house.

But the early part of 2007 proved to be different, with the worst snow falls for twenty years and a distinct lack of tourists who would normally be considering whether to buy a ski apartment.

Andorra has invested heavily in new infrastructure and facilities for the ski tourist in recent years, which would make a second successive poor season particularly hard to bear for the country’s ski tourist industry,if there is a lack of snow for the 2007-8 season as well.

Last year Andorra opened a new family friendly ski park in Arinsal, moving away from her old image of a cheap and cheerful ski holiday for 18-30 year olds to one that caters well for all. The snow park includes a conveyor belt and a game zone, designed to give children confidence before they ski and use the chair lifts.

Andorra is fortunate compared to many regions where ski holidays are an important part of the economy, as it is also a tax haven, second only to Monaco in Europe for popularity, and equal in tax benefits.

As well as attracting new residents with high net wealth who contribute to Andorra’s economy while in residence with their spending power, Andorra has a good banking system that provides good employment prospects.

To obtain residency in Andorra, applications need to be submitted in Catalan. A notarised copy of the applicants passport, birth certificate and a certificate of good conduct from the home country are submitted at the same time. Residency normally takes between three and six months to be approved.

Once residency is granted, residents are supposed to spend six months a year in Andorra, but this isn’t policed.

While the snow would often start in early November before this ski season, disastrously no sustained snow periods arrived until March this year.

No official figures have been released yet as to how many tourists visited this year, but some officials are reported to be guessing at a year on year fall of ten per cent. Private businesses suggest the figure could be closer to forty per cent. Given that private businesses see financial figures on a daily basis most people in the Andorra tourist industry are veering towards the higher forty per cent figure rather than what could be an optimistic official estimate.

Despite good snow in mid March and full occupancy at Easter, it was decided not to prolong the agony of Andorra’s worst tourist season for a generation, and the slopes were closed at the end of the Easter holidays, some three weeks earlier than some previous ski seasons.

Andorra has come a long way since the mid eighties when most ski tourists were under the age of twenty five and looking for a cheap ski holiday. With investment in hotels and in the ski slopes Andorra now competes on level terms with other European ski resorts. But unless Europe’s weather returns to the famaliar pattern of recent decades, all the investment Andorra has made in ski tourism could be for nothing.

Ski clubs, organizations, and resorts all have one common interest – the enjoyment of snowsport activities, which involves skiing, snowboarding, cross country, and telemark skiing. Not all ski resorts have a ski club associated with it, but for those who do, year-around-activities are provided which can include ski instruction, racing programs, social activities, and inter-club trips. While skiing is what brings these groups together in the first place, it is not necessarily what keeps them together. As stated, their love of skiing and winter sports – with common interests and feeling of community – keeps them skiing together for years and years, many times forming long friendships. People who ski should join a ski club, regardless of the level of ski expertise. Beginners are almost always welcome, and this is a great way for beginners to quickly improve their skills and techniques out on the slopes.

Ski clubs are better served through federal involvement, promoting improved communication, education and benefits, and influencing issues relevant to snowsport and ski clubs. Ski club members meet with ski industry representatives, working together to develop resources for not only members, but also for the affiliated ski resort. One of the 2005 brainstorms was involving the recruitment of new members into ski clubs. Some ideas brought up were: bring in members that have talents the club can use, such as tech support or web designing; involve college or university ski clubs; bring a friend to the club, allow them to learn about skiing and the equipment; or combine a club/council and college ski trip. In order to reach new demographics, promoting families and family trips were brought up.

Ski clubs are an exceptional way to learn some new things about skiing or snowboarding. Going on ski vacations with other ski club members at discounted rates, is occasionally offered on ski vacation packages involving ski resorts, ski areas, various mountains, and various countries. No matter where you live, there is a ski club near you. This is true even if you live in a place that does not ever get snowfall due to man made snow! Some are local clubs, meaning that the slopes that they ski on are within driving distance for the day, while others are more national or global, which means that if possible, they not only ski locally but they also plan ski trips. Arrangements are usually made through the club, so that everyone is eligible for the discounts. The money that is required from each member for the trip is usually paid to the club, and the club passes the funds onto pay for lodging, airfare, meals, lift tickets, and other perks that are included in the trip. Because arrangements are being made for a group of people – which is usually fairly large – discounts are given. This benefits all members of the club.

Utah Valley has become well known as a center for new business growth. The surrounding region is perfect for recruitment, investment, recreation, real estate, and economic growth.
Recruiting
Utah Valley is the center for two major universities, Brigham Young University BYU, and Utah Valley University UVU. The two schools combined have over 50,000 students who all live with in a 15 mile radius. The caliber of education from these two schools is noted each year in major publications. Nationwide recruiters frequently visit these campus looking because they know of the bright talent they find there.
Experience
Utah Valley is home to many wealthy, and experienced business leaders. Names include: Stephen Covey, Donnie and Marie Osmond, the founder of Neways and Nuskin, Dale Murphy, and many more. There is plenty of investment capital and angel investors eager to generate more wealth. Prior and current Utah Valley companies include, Omniture, Novell, Word Perfect, and Geneva Steel.
Recreation
Utah Valley is the gateway to many of Utah’s world renown recreation sites. To the north, are Alta, Snowbird, and Park City, known for the best snow on earth. The ski resorts are open from late November to early April. Utah Lake, located in the center of the valley, is large and perfect for fishing, boating, and swimming. To the south is the main highway that leads to Zions and Bryce national parks, and also the famous Lake Powell. The valley is surrounded by beautiful mountains, which are perfect for hiking and camping.
Real Estate
As of June 2008, Utah Valley is among the nation’s leaders in maintaining real estate value. Even during the current real estate downturn being experienced in the country, Utah has not experience large loss of value for its homes, land, and commercial real estate. Additionally, new homes continue to be built around the valley at a staggering rate. Average home prices for a five member family range from $200,000 to $500,000. Many of these homes have large yards, and are situated with views of the valley. Utah Valley’s crime rate is also among the lowest in the nation.
Economy
Utah’s unemployment rate is always well below the national average. Business start up costs are very low due to a young, well-educated workforce with strong work ethics. Recent State Government numbers show continued growth for the state due to low business taxes, and a growing population. During June 2008 over 50,000 new jobs were created in the State with many of those in Utah Valley. Much of the recent growth is due to increase in Technology businesses.
Summary

If you’re a LPN travel nursing posistions can be very exciting and pay very well. There are agencies that fill temporary vacancies in a variety of locations, you could end up on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, a ski resort in the Rockies, or in a top research hospital in California. LPNs are contracted for short-term assignments (as little as eight weeks, as long as 26) by agencies that specialize in travel nursing.

Perks include travel expenses, housing, benefits such as health insurance and 401ks, and help with obtaining licensing in different states. Best of all, LPN travel nursing positions usually earn a higher rate of pay than traditional nurses, and the race to attract LPNs is so competitive, some agencies even pay bonuses for the completion of an assignment or recruiting a friend.

In order to pursue a travel nursing career like this, you need to choose a travel nursing agency. To find the one that’s right for you, do some research to compare pay rates, benefits, and the variety and number of jobs available. Many nursing websites host forums where nurses give the thumbs up or down on their experiences with various agencies.

Once you have made your choice, completed an application, and been accepted as a traveling LPN, you will typically be assigned to a personal recruiter who will help you find the position you are looking for. Location, type of facility, and length of the job are some of the factors that will be discussed.

When a good match is found, you will probably have a phone interview with a manager at the hospital or facility. Personal recruiters provide appropriate information on the job to prepare you for the interview.

Young jobseekers in the UK are facing one of the toughest employment environments in years. According to the latest figures from High Fliers Research, leading graduate employers have cut their vacancies by nearly 28% in the last year.
Add to this the fact that the downturn has seen a record number of school leavers chasing limited university places and it should come as no surprise that there has been a significant increase in the amount of young people taking time out before studying or finding a job.

In fact, some gap year travel firms are seeing as much as a 75% increase in those interested in taking a gap year, while inquiries to the travel industry as a whole are up by 20%, reports the Guardian.

Not all gap years are planned

A growing number of students are taking unexpected gap years due to fierce competition for university places.

According to the Guardian, an estimated 130,000 students were unable to secure a degree place this year. Fortunately, it seems as if many of them are choosing to use their time off constructively.

One such student is Will Pitt from Surrey. Despite completing his A-Levels with three As and a B in maths, further maths, chemistry and economics; the young man learned that none of his university applications to read medicine had been accepted.

Instead of giving up on his career aspirations, Will decided to improve his chances of being accepted into medicine next year by signing up for the Medforce gap year scheme in India.

”I hadn’t originally wanted to do a gap year, but now I’ve kind of been forced to, I’m going to use it to make sure I stand out as a candidate next year,” he said.

”I actually feel glad now that I wasn’t awarded a place when I first applied,” he added.

Enhancing your CV

Whether it is a matter of choice or necessity, a strategic gap year can help you gain transferable skills and experience that could enhance your future job or education prospects.

A number of employers share this viewpoint, reports Graduatecareer, a supplement compiled by The Times and Milkround.com.

Claire Snell, graduate talent manager at Unilever, told the publication that around 50% of her firm’s graduate trainees had taken gap years and added that time off could “significantly bolster a candidate’s CV”.

However, not all gap years are equal in the eye of the employer.

According to Marlon Lloyd Malcolm from the recruitment firm Graduate Fasttrack, the growing popularity of gap years means employers now look for an experience that sets candidates apart.

He suggested a work placement in the UK, learning a foreign language or starting up a small business as constructive gap year options.
Time out also gives young people a chance to learn soft skills such as teamwork, effective communication and resourcefulness – which are required in any workplace.

A recent survey conducted by youth and education charity Raleigh International found that almost 90% of recruiters took attributes like these into consideration when selecting which candidates to put forward for graduate jobs in 2009.

”In this job market, evidence of soft skills and the ability to show how you can add value to an organisation are going to be more important than ever,” advised Raleigh’s chief executive Stacey Adams.

”This can be really tough for new graduates when they don’t have much previous work experience – although all of the graduate recruiters that we work with tell us that a well constructed gap year is a great way to develop these soft skills.”

What are the options open to Gappers?

In keeping with the current economic climate, there certainly seems to be a move towards gap year schemes that pay or include qualifications.
Roger Salwey, managing director of gap year provider Oyster Worldwide told the Guardian that his firm had experienced more demand for paid work than volunteer projects.

”In the last week I have noticed a 20% increase in phone calls and email inquiries about our paid work schemes – for example, working on farms in Australia or in Canadian ski resorts – but no change in those wanting to do voluntary work,” he said.

Organisations that arrange job placements have also received more applications for their services this year compared with last year.

The Year in Industry, which offers students paid placements during their gap years, has seen the amount of graduates and school leavers applying for its programmes climbing by 52% in the last year.

Similarly, PricewaterhouseCoopers saw interest in its gap year internship scheme surge by 30% in August alone.

It doesn’t have to be all work and no play
Some experts say that purposeful travel can be just as valuable as staying in the UK and gaining work experience.

According to Skyscanner, a travel search website, there are plenty of “tactical” gap year programmes available that combine travel with specialist work experience.

These include the Medforce programme, which organises volunteer placements in medical centres around the world for those keen to gain medical experience; teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), a great way to gain valuable work experience and learn a new language; working a ski season; or making a difference with VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas), an international development charity that recruits volunteers to work on projects in some of the poorest regions of the world.

All of these schemes can be tailored to suit either young and unskilled people or experienced professionals.

The rise of ‘grey gappers’ and career-breakers
While gap years are traditionally viewed as a rite of passage for the young, a recent survey by Halifax Unsecured Personal Loans reveals that students are not the only people who could benefit from a gap year.
According to the study, 49% of respondents aged 55 to 64 would consider taking a mature gap year.

Commenting on the findings, director of loans at Halifax Russell Galley said:
”A mature gap year is a wonderful opportunity to experience different ways of life and see other parts of the world.”

And it’s not only those who are reaching retirement age who are considering a gap year. An increasing number of UK workers in their late 20s, 30s and 40s are taking career-breaks.

This is partly due to the surge in companies offering their staff sabbaticals at reduced pay to manage costs yet retain talent until the economy turns a corner.

Earlier this year, BT employees were offered the choice of retaining their jobs but taking up to a year of annual leave with a 75% pay cut. BT brand manager, 36-year-old Jon Hawkins, decided to make the most of this opportunity.

”The 25% salary will pay our mortgage while my wife, 18-month-old son and I spend two months travelling through Japan, New Zealand and Bali,” he told The Times.

However, a career break should not be viewed purely as a holiday, advises Rachel Morgan-Trimmer, founder of thecareerbreaksite.com.

”A career break has to be constructive,” she told The Times.

”People who have set themselves challenges will be viewed better professionally, and meeting them makes them feel more capable,” she added.

No matter what age you are, it seems as if a well-thought-out gap year can provide a valuable opportunity to learn new and transferable skills, enhance your CV, and most importantly – build confidence in yourself and your abilities.

Tourism knows no single season. Leisure industries do not shut-down for the winter; they simply change locations and climates. You can enjoy all the thrills of snow sports or all the warmth and relaxation of Caribbean sun with a winter leisure job.

If the bitter-cold fog swarms dense and the skies threaten snow in London, surely fresh powdery snow will fall high in the Alps, where dedicated skiers and snowboarders vacation from early December through all of April. If rain falls in Vancouver, fresh snow falls at Whistler Mountain, where legions of dedicated amateurs wish to slide down the mountains in Olympians’ tracks.

Meanwhile, a small armada of cruise ships plies the Caribbean’s clear, warm waters, catering to refugees from all kinds of arctic climes.

All those winter vacationers require service of all kinds. Recreation and hospitality jobs abound, well-paid and prestigious culinary positions invite new applicants, and management opportunities await new graduates of hotel and restaurant management programs. Whatever your wintertime passion, you easily can combine it with a satisfying winter leisure job.

Winter leisure job in the snow?

Combine your passion for big air with your people-penchant, becoming a ski instructor at any of a hundred upscale resorts in need of your services. Or dedicate your black-diamond ski skills to patrolling the mountains, keeping the slopes safe and ministering to intermediate sliders who take-on a little too much and fall a little too far a little too hard. If you have mechanical skills, help the resorts maintain and repair their heavy equipment, and if you have heavy equipment skills, become a “Snowcat” operator. Every ski resort depends on hundreds of employees who work round the clock to keep the slopes groomed and ready for visitors.

Many of the finest European and North American ski resorts now offer casino gambling. Opulent new casinos in high-end destinations need employees of all descriptions. Why not ski all day and deal all night, rubbing elbows with and putting cards in the air for Hollywood celebrities, European royalty, and stars from the World Series of Poker? Or why not put your exceptional service skills to work as a concierge?

Winter leisure job in the sun?

If you dread “raccoon eyes” and near-terminal frost bite, look for a winter leisure job with the world’s major cruise lines. Major cruise ships are giant floating cities, and everything it takes to sustain a city must similarly go to sea about a cruise ship. No matter what your skills and background, you probably can find attractive, gainful employment aboard ship.

Especially if you have athletic, aquatic, and teaching skills, the cruise lines are eager to offer attractive winter leisure jobs. All those swimming pools and water slides need instructors and lifeguards almost around the clock. Beginning snorkelers and intermediate scuba divers need instruction before they plunge into the clear blue seas. And a small army of eager children—tots to teens—needs constant supervision, entertainment, and instruction.

Several reputable and reliable online brokerages connect would-be leisure workers with employment opportunities. Enter “winter leisure job” in your search engine, and watch great opportunities appear.

For about 20 years, Global Network Resort sold vacation packages for between $8,000 and $12,000 without any opportunity make any money. This meant that people were buying into the resort vacation club to take vacations, expecting nothing in return but a great vacation. They have recently merged to form a second company that is offering a business opportunity to those who want to experience a new lifestyle.

They also dropped the price of their vacation packages, making them more affordable to a wider range of people and sell them in a global market. Their members are not limited by geography and the member hotels and resorts have far fewer black out dates than many other plans. Meaning, there is more flexibility in planning a vacation around your schedule instead of planning it around available accommodations.

Additionally, people who want to earn a residual income can join a team that can make as much as $1,000 on every qualified sale of a product that has been sold for considerably more money. Additionally, they can earn money with a commission from other successful sellers of vacation memberships that they recruit into the company. With many internet marketing opportunities there is what is called a two-up rule, meaning the commission on the first two sales go to the person who recruited you into the business, eliminating your first two commission checks.

Other companies may also require annual or monthly maintenance fees but with membership at Global Network Resort there is only the initial charge, not other fees to pay to the company…ever. Compared to some vacation clubs that can charge an annual fee of up to $900 this is a significant savings.

Discounts available are not limited to resort hotels as they can be used on cruise and at ski reports. Some of the savings may include seven-night stays are four and five-star resorts for between $300 and $700, depending on the time of year. There are also special weeks where the hotels offer even bigger discounts to Global Network members.

The biggest advantage is having access to a global market of resorts and the pay plan for those choosing to participate in the selling aspect can allow the to receive commission on their sales and well as commissions on the sales of those they recruit for what the company call in perpetuity. This cannot only provide a steady and improved level of income but it can also provide future income for better financial security.

While the pay plan is centered on driving new business by recruiting new sales associates, the primary goal is to sell vacation packages through the companies web site as well as through personal contact. Many participants believe it is the best way for potential customers to learn about all the benefits of the packages as well as being able to get instant answers to any questions they may have.

Support by the company is available should any problems crop up while on a trip and someone will be available to help straighten out any kinks in the travel plans.

The travel industry is in a constant state of recruitment in order to fill various positions during on and off season periods. The great thing about the industry is that there are jobs for all manner of workers who are able to make tourists feel more at home. For instance plumbers, electricians or chefs are all heavily required when the travel industry undergoes recruitment drives. This is a great opportunity for those who like to travel and work abroad and have a glorious life in the sun whilst having the money to enjoy the pursuits of tourists.

Recruitment in the travel industry spans a wide variety of sectors, for workers however it may mean taking a pay cut in order to have the pleasure of working abroad. The pay cut is usually worthwhile however due to the fact that often the cost of living is reduced abroad. Working abroad can also look great upon a CV and those just starting out in their careers may want to do a stint of working abroad in order to gain vital experience. After all, a well travelled candidate is far more appealing to recruitment agencies on your return to the UK.

If you already work in the hospitality industry you are a prime candidate for travel recruitment. Having the attributes to accommodate people and make them feel welcome are skills that the travel industry highly regards. Jobs roles such as bar workers, waiting staff as well as hotel workers are always in great need in the travel industry; if you are in one of these jobs roles already you may well wish to consider travelling abroad and working in sunnier climbs.

It is not just the summer holiday market that requires extensive periods of recruitment. With winter holidays becoming evermore popular, ski resorts are heavily relying upon foreign workers to meet their staffing needs. If you can ski or snowboard to an expert level you may wish to consider instruction on the slopes. Added to instruction jobs, the travel industry also recruits many apres-ski workers in the bars and hotels to make guests’ stays more comfortable. If you enjoy winter sports and do not mind working for a living, doing a season in a ski resort is an ideal way of getting plenty of time on the piste and earning a little money while you are there.

The travel industry also undergoes recruitment for holiday reps regularly. While these jobs can be stressful there is a lot of fun to be had. Holiday companies that focus upon younger travellers include attributes such as energy, and sense of fun in their recruitment processes; so if you like a party you may well want to enter this kind of job.

Although there is fun there is also a serious side to these kinds of jobs, responsibility is key for two reasons. Firstly because as a holiday rep you are responsible for a large group of people and secondly because you must represent the travel company at all times to ensure their standards of behaviour and service are met.

If you possess a specialist skill you may also be eligible for recruitment in the travel industry. Instructors in a wide variety of activities such as diving, waterskiing and horse riding are all required regularly and means that instructors can do something they love, in beautiful surroundings and still get paid for it. Once again there is an element of responsibility as at all times you are in charge of a group of people and their safety should always be your paramount concern.

The reason the travel industry needs so many people from England is mainly due to the language barrier. Tourists like to have English speaking guides and instructors so they can get the best from their experiences.

If you want to be even more eligible for recruitment in the travel industry it is worth becoming bi-lingual as this will allow you to converse with tourists and locals alike. Having another language is a highly valuable asset to those who work in travel. If you think you can ensure people get the best from their holidays and would like to work in the sun, or the snow, the travel industry could well be perfect for you.
